While vacationing at a resort on the north coast of The Dominican Republic, Debbie and I met a couple from Canada who had started a charity to help build homes for destitute families. We left the resort and walked across the street where we were saddened by the extreme poverty, and inspired by Jack and Louise Zobell and the work they were doing. Because Debbie was recently retired from a 37 year teaching career in Natrona County, and currently serves on the NCSD Board of Trustees, we wanted to help make a difference in the educational opportunities for these poor children and we believed that if the children learned to speak English they would create more opportunities for themselves as adults. Because the largest industry on the island is tourism, these kids will have more opportunities if they are bilingual.

Because of the good work Jack & Louise are doing to help poor children, we were inspired and had an idea of our own. Thus was born Dominican Starfish USA. We came home and registered as a 501(c)3 public charity and started fundraising. To this point, we have received many donations from mostly friends and family. Since September, 2014, donations have added 8 ceiling fans, indoor bathrooms, tile floors, and most importantly, food for 180 children at two private elementary schools where kids can go to school for free. They are now receiving a more balanced meal, and for some it is their only meal.

In the Dominican Republic, it is common that the poorest of the poor are children who live with families who cannot afford the cost of sending their children to public school. Having an opportunity to go to school for free is one of the surest ways for a poor child to get ahead when growing up in the Dominican Republic. We hope you will consider giving generously.
